How to choose the right cowboy hat

The right hat comes down to three things: fit, material, and occasion. Getting those right means you'll wear it constantly instead of letting it collect dust.

Fit first: The hat should sit about an inch above your ears and feel snug without pressure. A hat that moves around with the wind is the wrong size.
Material for the season: Felt hats are built for fall and winter. Straw works best in warm weather. Leather is the most durable option year-round.
Brim width for your face: A wider brim balances a longer face. A shorter brim works better with rounder features. When in doubt, try both before you decide.
Occasion: A structured felt hat in a dark tone works for formal settings. A straw or open-road style is the better call for outdoor and casual wear.

How to wear a western style hat

Cowboy and cowgirl hats work across more outfits than most people expect. The key is matching the hat to the rest of the look instead of treating it as an afterthought.

With a full western outfit: Pair a structured cattleman or pinch front hat with cowboy boots and dark wash jeans. A leather hat in black or brown ties the whole look together without effort.

With casual wear: A gambler or open-road style works over a simple t-shirt and jeans. Keep the rest of the outfit clean and let the hat do the talking.

For an event or night out: Go with a felt hat in a darker tone. Match it to your boots and belt for a put-together western look that stands out in any room.

Why a quality hat is worth it

A well-made western style cowboy hat lasts for years. The materials hold their shape, the crown keeps its structure, and the finish stays sharp with basic care. That's more than most accessories can offer at the same price point.

Built to last: Quality felt and leather hats hold their shape for years with minimal upkeep.
Protects you from the elements: A wide brim blocks sun, wind, and light rain better than any cap.
Completes the outfit: No western look is fully put together without the right hat on top.
Works for everyone: The variety of styles, sizes, and materials means there is a hat for every head and every occasion.

How to care for your cowboy hat

The right care keeps your hat looking sharp for years. A few simple habits make all the difference.

Store it upside down on the crown to keep the brim from losing its shape.
Keep it away from direct sunlight and humidity to prevent fading and warping.
Brush felt hats regularly with a soft hat brush to remove dust and lint.
For straw hats, wipe them down with a damp cloth and let them air dry naturally.

At 827 Outpost you'll find a wide selection of hats for cowboys and cowgirls from the most trusted brands in western style. They are not just hats, they are part of the outfit. Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular cowboy hat style?

The cattleman is the most recognized and widely worn style. It works across casual and formal settings and pairs well with almost any western outfit. If you're buying your first hat, this is the safest starting point.

How do I know what size cowboy hat I need?

Measure the circumference of your head about an inch above your ears. Use that measurement to match against the brand's sizing chart. Hat sizes vary between brands, so always check before you buy.

Can women wear the same cowboy hat styles as men?

Yes. Most styles work for both. Some brands offer cuts designed specifically for women with a slightly narrower crown and adjusted brim proportions, but the core styles are the same across the board.

What is the difference between felt and straw cowboy hats?

Felt is warmer and more structured, making it the right choice for fall and winter or formal occasions. Straw is lighter and breathable, built for warm weather and outdoor events. Both are available in a wide range of styles and prices.

How do I reshape a cowboy hat that lost its form?

For felt hats, hold the hat over steam for a few seconds and reshape it by hand while the felt is warm. For straw hats, dampen the area slightly and let it dry in the correct shape. If the damage is significant, a hat shop can re-block it professionally.
